What do we do when work gets more challenging? Our habitual reaction is to work harder. And this most often doesn’t help, it can even harm our performance. That’s what Briceño calls “chronic performance”. In his book he offers thoughtful and practical ways helping us out of this trap so that we can achieve more successful (and more joyful) performance. The key is to balance performance and learning: “When it comes to performing skillfully, we need to stop focusing on just getting things done."What I particularly liked about the book:* His message that more or better performance isn’t the solution is enormously freeing and opens a new approach which can lead to more balance and joy in our lives* The book adds the critical component to turn a growth mindset into tangible improvements: “To grow and succeed, we must develop the belief that we can change, as well as the competence for how to change.” The HOW is what Briceño explains in the book: He offers strategies each of us can apply to integrate the Learning Zone into our daily life.* It’s an enjoyable read because it’s full of interesting real-life stories and case examples, and Briceño uses an appealing language (e.g. “salt and pepper” for the Learning Zone and the Performance Zone. Plus it contains lots of helpful illustrations and frameworks.* At the end of each chapter you find not only reflection questions to reflect on the past chapter, but also a question looking forward priming your thinking about what is ahead. - I find this an excellent idea, very engaging.* Finally, Briceño openly shares his own experiences and shortcomings and thus becomes a “real person” whom we like to listen to.I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in:* How to make a growth-mindset work in business* How to escape our trap of more/better/faster performance* How to integrate learning in a more dedicated, systematic way
