Colson Whiteheads Meisterwerk bietet eine einfühlsame Darstellung des Lebens von Sklaven und ihrer verzweifelten Suche nach Freiheit. Mit beeindruckender Sprache und einer packenden Handlung ist dieses Buch ein absolutes Muss für jeden, der sich für historische Romane interessiert.

Normally I bypass these critically acclaimed and highly praised books, since in 8 out of 10 cases it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on – or the juice needed to download the sample to my Kindle (in my opinion) – so I was about to skip The Underground Railroad as well, until it was recommended in a book group by a person with similar tastes and likes / dislikes in books….What a journey… no, the underground railroad has never been a real railroad, but is used as a mode of transportation from one group of people to the next – their ulterior motives or plain kind-heatedness, bringing Cora one step closer – to what? Being caught, being free, hating her mother more or less? Finding herself? Peace? The clear image of what white people do to black people and black people do to black people, or black people do to white people?This book doesn’t sink into kitsch – thank you for that! The narrative seems slightly distant – not as much as 12 Years a Slave, but heading there. I liked it that way, same as none of the characters is black or white (in character not skin-color) – shades of grey – life is not black or white and nobody can live it for you.“White men ain’t going to do it.
