Best read in quiet some time.
An actually beautiful story from Obama’s reading list this summer. It has nuances of Crichton’s Timeline, some Bradbury, then of course the general and somewhat philosophical question: do we live in a simulation? And on top Mrs. St John Mandel puts in a pandemic, developing on earth and outer Space colonies some time in the future. Good time-travelling story with a lot of thought put into it. Five stars!
This book is very much in the style of Emily St. John Mandel with the story leaping from century to century and place to place. She creates a marvelous structural experience. The book picks up some of the threads from her other bestsellers: The Glass House and Station Eleven. The book is, however, not as interesting as her earlier books because the characters are not as interesting.
