An incredibly powerful and well founded analysis and presentation!!

Other than Hobsbawm argues DeLong for a 140 years long twentieth century (from 1870 - 2010). While his focus is economic history, in fact he takes a much broader perspective and also considers all the political challenges during this period.DeLong justifies his view with the narrativ of this period being "the first century ever in which history was predominantly a matter of economics". Throughout the book he convincingly explains that indeed this is a valuable perspective to look at recent history.Of course DeLong needs to simplify. Otherwise it would have been impossible to finish this book with a bit more than 500 pages. It is probably fair to summarize that his view on the past best matches with Keynes and uses Hayek and Polany as as the poles between which to move. One does not have to share DeLongs belief in social democracy as the better way to improve global living conditions. But even if a more Hayekian view was what a reader supports, this book is absolutely worth reading. It s an amazing rear view mirror of what happened - as long as you remember that such objects may be closer than they appear.
