The Universe versus Alex Woods: An UNFORGETTABLE story of an unexpected friendship, an unlikely hero and an improbable journey

On the radio I heard the comment on this surprising book and immediately ordered it onto my kindle ebook. As the journalist had promised, I simply could not stop reading after the first 3 pages and went on every night until late.Some may say it is a slightly overstretched topic with an epileptic youngster growing mature, the question of assisted suicide and bullying, but in the mixture that Gavin Extence offers, it shows up as a totally new and (in spite of the seriousness integrated) entertaining, sometimes even hilarious book. You can identify so well with this young kid who is troubled by so many outside issues, and at the same time is seeing the world in a phantastically detached way. The book is never soapy or over emotional. If you are acquainted with the British society you will find many amusing details ( NHS, police ways of interrogation, the press etc). I can highly recommend this wonderful book.

Ich bin sehr wählerisch und lege Bücher manchmal bereits bei der ersten kleinen Schwäche beiseite, wenn es sein muss auch kurz vor dem Ende...Berufskrankheit und Spleen in einem ;-)Was "The Universe..." auszeichnet ist zum einen die tolle Geschichte, die ich hier nicht in Eimzelheiten wiedergeben möchte. Die Charaktere sind glaubhaft und in all ihren Facetten liebenswert. Der Plot schwankt zwischen unglaublich abgedreht, witzig bis tragisch komisch und traurig. Diese Mischung bekommen nur wenige Autoren hin, ohne aufgesetzt zu wirken. Gavin Extence hat dies mit Bravour geschafft.Die deutsche Übersetzung habe ich auch angelesen. Sie ist trotz des dümmlichen Titels recht gut und ebenfalls lesenwert. Wie bei allen Büchern gilt besonders auch für "The Universe versus Alex Woods": die echte Sprache des Autors erschließt sich nur im Original-Text ;-) Viel Spass mit diesem tollen Buch.

It starts strong and ends strong. But there are times when in drags. The author brings a premise that emulates Kurt Vonnegut up to a point, then disappoints, at least this reader. If he had used the epileptic episodes to explore alternative perception it would have been more interesting and more in line with the Vonnegut style. He primarily used the episodes to create a somewhat unique coming of age story But I still give Alex...Universe 4 stars. It is well written; I feel the premise had significant unexplored potential.
