The Black Flamingo: The much loved, award-winning, queer coming-of-age story

I have the worst headache today because I started this last night and couldn’t put it down.I loved it!One of my bookish New Years resolutions was reading more ownvoice POC storys!I was so excited to read this one, I preordered and couldn’t wait for it to arrive.Once it came in the mail I immediately started it.For me it came by surprise that it’s written in verse and not prose, but I absolutely loved it! It was a total pageturner and super emotional. I fell in love with Michael on page 1 and I fell even more while following him growing up.I’ve never read a book with a drag queen/king before and it was amazing!!!Definitely one of my favourite books this year so far.Also look at that cover!!!! Isn’t it gorgeous?All the feels for this story and Mike. Go read it.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Started and finished “THE BLACK FLAMINGO” by Dean Atta within a day. It is an incredibly moving prose journey of what it means to be Black, queer and British and how to express your identity in a world that constantly tells you who you should be instead of encouraging to be your unique self. It follows Michael’s journey of self-discovery from his early childhood to his university years. It is a wonderful meeting space for everyone familiar with and foreign to drag as an expression of identity and freedom. ⁣I highly recommend picking this one up and checking out Atta’s poetry performances online, too.

I am so glad that I got the hardcover edition of this book. The cover and the book itself are beautifully designed! Also lots of art, doodles and different fonts/layouts on the inside, which make the story even better. The writing style is very addictive and I almost read it in one go. Contains beautiful poems/songs/... as well, but it is one connected story line.
