Midnight Sun: Discover the novel that inspired addictive new film The Hanging Sun

Found this slim adventure marvellous to read but hard to interpret as a sequel to “Blood on Snow”. It is all about culture vs. nature, ratio vs. heart and spiritual redemption. It takes place in the late summer and early autumn of 1978 in Finnmark, Norway’s northernmost, polar region, homeland of the Sami and their reindeer. There, a hamlet of 20 adults and a sectarian church becomes a bolthole for Jon Hansen, an Oslo-southerner, hash dealer and failed contract killer, who is on the run. Not as a fugitive from the law, but worse, trying to elude certain death after failing and defrauding the Fisherman, Norway’s main supplier of hard drugs, known to find and kill anyone crossing him, wherever they are...Here, Nesbo has created an atmosphere of deepening personal despair in his main protagonist. Plus a handful of lively and engaging local characters. He has plotted wonderfully and slowly, with frequent flashbacks and whiffs of the absurd as in Patrick deWitt’s novels, or of Westerns edging towards a final shoot out. Throughout, he uses the concept of responsibility. The book’s constant musings about the proper way to live and how “Midnight Sun” eventually ends, should be welcome discussion topics for book reading clubs.

Ich bin großer Jo Nesbo -Fan und habe alle Bücher gelesen. Dieses ist leider ein schlechter Abklatsch!Dann lieber Pause machen und nach einigem Sammeln ein neues Buch schreiben!Ist wie bei Musikstars, die gute CDs machen und danach irgendwann nur schlechte Kopien neu rausbringen!
