[Theories of Denominational Conflict. Constructions and Essentialisations in Recent Theological History] Today, ecumenism is almost taken for granted. Promoting unity among Christian churches is considered important, especially in an increasingly secular world. This anthology deals with a topic that is occasionally discussed in connection with ecumenism, namely the assumption of a denominational divide. This refers to the idea that there is something specifically Catholic and something specifically Protestant that makes it difficult or even impossible to communicate with one another. The volume examines the various theories of denominational opposition, the circumstances under which they arose, and how they can be classified. The authors conduct research in the fields of ecumenism, church history, and systematic theology.
