Shared Histories: Collaboration in Ethnographic Film

What forms of collaboration or 'shared histories' can ethnographic film embrace to produce works that more closely reflect the perspectives and priorities of the Indigenous and minority communities they represent This richly illustrated collection of fifteen essays explores the perspectives, challenges, and evolving practices of 'collaboration' in over a century of ethnographic filmmaking. It addresses field research, production, and post-production processes; the frequent tensions between filmmakers' visions and public, commercial or political agendas in early ethnographic cinema; the reframi ng of the ethnographic archive in 21st century. The essays highlight emerging community-based and collaborative initiatives focused on creation, co-authorship, and the repatriation of audiovisual heritage.
