R407C Refrigerant – Proven R22 Replacement for Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems
R407C is an established HFC refrigerant for air conditioning, heat pump, and commercial refrigeration applications, characterized by its R22-like performance and broad system compatibility. It is used in split systems, VRF units, and heat pumps and has been considered a standard retrofit solution for existing R22 systems for years. At Voll Gas, you can get R407C refrigerant with a 10 kg filling weight in a refillable cylinder with a 1/4-inch connection for safe filling and maintenance of your systems.
The correct filling quantity and a tested product are crucial for reliable operation. Our p roducts are tested, quickly available, and comply with applicable safety standards.
Products and Filling Quantities
R407C refrigerant is designed for air conditioning systems and heat pumps that previously operated with R22 or are designed for R407C from the outset. The 10 kg cylinder with a refillable cylinder and 1/4-inch connection is suitable for maintenance work on existing systems as well as for new installations in the commercial sector. The cylinder is included in the price.

What is R407C? Properties and Use
R407C is a ternary HFC refrigerant mixture of R32, R125, and R134a. It was developed to replace R22 in existing and new systems without the ozone-depleting potential of its predecessor. The GWP value is ~1774 – significantly lower than older HCFC refrigerants, but higher than newer alternatives such as R32 or R449A. Safety class A1 designates it as non-flammable and non-toxic.
The refrigerant is mainly used in air conditioning systems and heat pumps that previously operated with R22. Due to its temperature glide (~7 K), particular care is required in system design. The most important technical properties of R407C:
No ozone depletion potential: ODP = 0, completely ozone-friendly
Safety class A1: Non-flammable, low toxicity
R22-like performance: Allows for retrofit without complete system replacement
Temperature glide ~7 K: Requires careful system adjustment when converting
Broad applicability: Suitable for split, VRF, and heat pump systems
Handling requires care and valid certification according to Art. 10 (1) of Regulation (EU) 573/2024. Installation and filling may only be carried out by trained specialists.
R407C as a retrofit solution for R22 systems
R407C was specifically developed for retrofitting existing R22 systems. Its performance data is similar to R22, allowing for a direct replacement in many systems. However, an oil change to POE oil is required for retrofitting, as R407C is not compatible with the mineral oil commonly used in R22 systems. The system must be professionally inspected before any retrofit.
The temperature glide of ~7 K is a significant difference compared to pure refrigerants like R32. It occurs because the components of the mixture evaporate and condense at different temperatures. This affects the design of heat exchangers and expansion valves. Older systems designed for R22 can usually be converted to R407C – however, a professional inspection and, if necessary, replacement of components are essential. Use only refrigerants that comply with EN 378 and ISO 817 standards.
Safety, Storage, and Disposal
R407C belongs to safety class A1 and is considered non-flammable. Nevertheless, basic safety measures must be observed during handling. Avoid direct skin contact with liquid refrigerant and work in well-ventilated areas, as released gas can displace oxygen. The safety data sheet contains all relevant information on hazards, protective measures, and first aid – read it carefully before use.
The most important safety instructions for working with R407C refrigerant:
Ensure ventilation: Work in well-ventilated areas or outdoors
Wear protective equipment: Use safety glasses and gloves when handling
Perform leak check: Check connections before and after filling
Observe pressure limits: Never exceed permissible operating pressures
Have an emergency plan ready: Know first aid measures in case of skin contact or inhalation
Store containers upright in cool, dry rooms, protected from direct sunlight and heat sources above 50 °C. Keep refrigerant cylinders away from flammable materials and secure them against tipping. Disposal is subject to legal regulations for fluorinated
