White Chrysanthemum: Mary Lynn Bracht (Vintage Heroines)

A moving story that adeptly combines historical facts, beautiful prose, and narrative fiction.Thanks to a seminar on Korean cinema, I was already somewhat familiar with what had happened to so-called "comfort women" during the Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula. However, it was very moving, albeit sometimes difficult and painful, to be told of their story by a character who experienced the horrors of sexual slavery. But pain is not the only thing this book focuses on, which in my book is a positive, since otherwise it could have veered towards "trauma p*rn". It was very touching to read about the two sisters always looking for one another and not giving up hope.I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction, Korean history, and people interested in reading a thought-provoking book.
